President Theodore Roosevelt took office in 1901 following the assassination of President William McKinley. It was during his administration that the West Wing was built. The addition provided Roosevelt and his staff an area for workspace separate from the first family's living quarters. The portrait of President Roosevelt that inspired this bookmark hangs in the East Room on the State Floor of the White House.
